Flossy the Comfort Chicken

A Nana's Attic Story

The attic was unusually quiet that afternoon.

Snowflake was the first to hear the footsteps.

"Shhh," she whispered. "Someone's coming."

The other attic friends listened carefully.

Step...

Step...

Step...

The footsteps were slow and steady as they climbed the old wooden stairs.

Hugo peeked over the edge of the bookshelf.

"It's Nana!" he whispered excitedly.

"But... that's strange."

"Why?" asked Terry.

Hugo tilted his head.

"Nana always crochets downstairs."

The attic friends watched as Nana carried a basket filled with soft yarn, her favorite crochet hook, and a warm mug of tea.

She looked around the attic and smiled.

Then, instead of putting another finished friend on a shelf, she settled into her favorite rocking chair beneath the little round window.

No one had ever seen Nana crochet in the attic before.

"I wonder what she's making," Hugo whispered.

"I don't know," Snowflake answered softly.

"But I think today is a very special day."

Nana looked around at all the friends she had made over the years.

Snowflake smiled gently from her shelf.

Terry stood proudly nearby.

Coral rested beside a stack of books.

Benny, Leo, Valentina, Hopper, Violet, and Déogee all seemed to smile back at her.

Nana's heart felt a little lighter.

She picked up the softest ball of fluffy yarn she could find.

"I think," she whispered to herself with a gentle smile, "it's time to make something comforting."

The crochet hook began to dance.

Loop by loop...

Stitch by stitch...

The attic grew wonderfully quiet as everyone watched to see who their newest friend would be.

Hugo leaned forward as far as he could.

"Do you think it's another bunny?"

Terry chuckled.

"Maybe it's a dinosaur!"

Everyone laughed.

Even Nana smiled, as if she imagined exactly what they might be saying.

The fluffy yarn slowly began to take shape.

"Look!" Hugo whispered.

"I think I see a little beak!"

Coral leaned closer.

"And those tiny wings!"

"Maybe it's a baby bird," Benny said with a smile.

Leo nodded.

"It certainly looks soft."

Round after round, Nana's crochet hook moved gently through the yarn.

Every stitch seemed to carry a little more love.

Every loop seemed to bring a little more peace.

The attic friends noticed something, too.

When Nana had first climbed the stairs, her shoulders had seemed tired.

Now they looked relaxed.

Her smile had grown a little brighter.

Snowflake smiled to herself.

"I think our new friend is already helping."

Hugo looked puzzled.

"But... she isn't even finished yet!"

Snowflake giggled.

"Sometimes making something with love helps before it's even done."

Hugo thought about that for a moment.

"I never knew stitches could do that."

Neither did Terry.

Neither did Benny.

Neither did Leo.

But somehow...

It seemed true.

Finally, Nana tied the very last stitch.

Nana looked down at the little chicken resting in her lap and smiled.

She wrapped the tiny chicken in the gentlest hug.

A peaceful smile spread across Nana's face.

"There you are," she whispered.

"I've been needing you."

The attic friends looked at one another.

No one spoke.

Even Hugo stayed quiet.

It felt like one of those moments that was too special for questions.

After a little while, Nana gently placed the little chicken in an empty spot on the shelf.

The newest friend blinked her bright little eyes.

She looked around at all the smiling faces.

"Welcome to Nana's Attic," Snowflake said warmly.

Hugo couldn't wait another second.

"What's your name?"

Just then, Nana looked back toward the shelf.

She smiled as though she knew exactly which question Hugo would have asked.

"I think..."

She paused for just a moment.

"...your name is Flossy."

The little chicken smiled.

It was the perfect name.

And from that day on, everyone in Nana's Attic knew something wonderful.

Sometimes courage is exactly what you need.

Sometimes curiosity helps you discover amazing things.

And sometimes...

every heart simply needs a little comfort.
