Meet Nana Dawn

Hi! I’m Dawn Cherie Walker — Nana Dawn — the maker, crochet designer, children's author, and slightly yarn-obsessed imagination behind Nana’s Attic Crochet in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

Everything handmade in Nana's Attic is made by me, one stitch at a time.

Around here, a ball of yarn rarely stays just a ball of yarn. It might become a puppy, hippo, dragon, dolphin, astronaut — or something I haven't even dreamed up yet.

I've been crocheting for more than 50 years, and what began as something I loved eventually grew into Nana's Attic Crochet: a place filled with handmade plush animals, original crochet patterns, special gifts, and characters with stories of their own.

A Crochet Hook and a Story to Tell

Storytelling has been part of my creative life almost as long as crochet.

In 1995, I wrote a children's story called The Adventures of Kit Kat — and then tucked it away for 21 years. Kit Kat finally became my first published children's book in 2016, followed by The Yard Sale Alphabet Book. That chapter led to author interviews and participation in the Berkeley County Library System's 2017 Tri-County Literary Celebration.

Years later, my two creative worlds finally came together.

Today, many of my crocheted characters are also part of the Nana's Attic Storybook Collection, where characters like Snowflake, Terry, Coral, Benny, Leo, Valentina, Hugo, Violet Woolsey, Déogee, Flossy, and Andy the Astronaut get to continue their adventures on the page.

In 2026, Hugo the Curious Hippo joined my published books — bringing the journey from Kit Kat to Nana's Attic full circle.

A child can cuddle a handmade character, read their story, and then use their own imagination to decide what happens next.

That's the kind of childhood magic I want Nana's Attic to create.

Original Designs, Too

I don't just crochet the finished animals — I design many of them, too.

Over the years, my original Nana's Attic Crochet designs have appeared on well-known crochet platforms including Ravelry, LoveCrafts, and Lion Brand Yarn, where Nana's Attic Crochet has been credited as a pattern designer.

Today, my growing collection of original crochet patterns is available right here at Nana's Attic Crochet, so other crocheters can bring some of these creations to life themselves.

Made in the Charleston Lowcountry

Nana's Attic Crochet is based in Goose Creek, South Carolina, just outside Charleston. You'll often find me — and a tent full of crocheted creatures — at festivals, markets, fundraisers, and community events throughout the Charleston and Berkeley County area.

I'm also proud to be included in Charleston Magazine's Charleston Makers, celebrating local artists, creators, and entrepreneurs.

From learning to crochet as a child to becoming a published author, crochet designer, and small-business owner, I certainly didn't have all of this mapped out.

I just kept creating.

From My Attic to Your Home

What matters most to me hasn't changed.

I love making things that mean something to people.

Maybe it's a child's new favorite stuffed animal, a baby gift that becomes a keepsake, a memorial creation honoring a beloved pet, or a crochet pattern that lets another maker create something of their own.

There may be faster ways to make things, but that's not what Nana's Attic is about.

No factory. No assembly line.

Just Nana Dawn, a crochet hook, a whole lot of yarn — and more than 50 years of experience behind every stitch.
