What Is Amigurumi? (And Why I Love Making It)

Hello Crochet Enthusiast!
The Little Art of Amigurumi
If you’ve spent any time around Nana’s Attic, you’ve probably heard the word amigurumi.
It sounds fancy, but it simply means the art of crocheting small stuffed toys from yarn.
The word comes from Japan and literally means “stuffed crochet creation.” These little yarn creatures are usually animals, but they can also be people, flowers, food, or just about anything your imagination dreams up.
And let me tell you…
Once you start making them, it’s hard to stop.
Why I Love Making Amigurumi
Every amigurumi begins the same way in my craft room.
A skein of yarn.
A crochet hook.
And a quiet idea forming in my mind.
Slowly, stitch by stitch, something begins to take shape.
First a tiny body…
Then a head…
Little arms and legs…
And before long, there’s a new little personality sitting on my table.
That’s one of the things I love most about this craft — each creation feels like it has its own story.
Some of them eventually make their way into the Attic Storybook world, while others simply become cuddly companions waiting for a new home.
Why Amigurumi Is So Special
Amigurumi may look complicated, but the truth is the stitches are surprisingly simple.
Most pieces are made using basic crochet stitches like single crochet, increases, and decreases. Once you learn those basics, you can make almost anything your imagination comes up with.
Another reason makers love amigurumi is that it's a wonderful way to use up leftover yarn. Even small scraps can turn into something adorable.
And perhaps best of all…
It’s relaxing.
There’s something peaceful about sitting with a hook and yarn, watching a little character slowly come to life in your hands.
A Few Tips If You Ever Want to Try It
If you've ever thought about making your own amigurumi, here are a few beginner tips:
• Start with a simple pattern so you can learn the rhythm of the stitches.
• Choose soft yarn that’s comfortable to work with.
• Take your time — neat stitches make a big difference.
• And most important… have fun with it.
Amigurumi is one of those crafts where creativity really gets to shine.

Where the Stories Begin
Many of the little creatures I crochet eventually find their way into the Attic Storybook world.
Each month inside the Nana’s Attic Storybook Club, a new character steps into the attic and their story begins. Members receive the extended storybook version, along with coloring pages and activities that bring the characters to life even more.
It’s become one of my favorite parts of this whole adventure — watching these yarn creations grow into stories that families can enjoy together.

🧶 Maker’s Corner: Meet Doodle the Rooster
I’m so excited to introduce you to the newest member of Nana’s Attic…
Doodle the Rooster! 🐓💛
This cheerful little fellow has been in the works for quite some time, and he’s finally ready to step out of the attic and into your hands.
Doodle is full of personality — the kind of project that makes you smile while you’re stitching and even more when you see him finished. With his bold shape and playful charm, he’s a true statement piece that’s perfect for gifting, displaying, or adding a little fun to your craft table.
Whether you're looking for something a little different to make, or you just want a project that feels full of life, Doodle is a joy from start to finish.

Blessings from the Attic,
Nana Dawn
P.S. Many of the attic characters begin as crochet creations sitting on my craft table… and then their stories begin. The Storybook Club is where those adventures continue each month.
