Hopper the Bunny Who Moved a Little Slower
Dawn WalkerShare
Sometimes the attic feels very busy.
Books get stacked.
Ribbons get folded.
Tiny paws hurry from one corner to another.
But not every friend in Nana's Attic moves at the same speed.
And that's exactly how Hopper arrived.
Meet Hopper the Bunny
One quiet afternoon, the attic door slowly creaked open.
Warm sunlight spilled across the wooden floorboards as Nana carefully climbed the attic stairs, carrying something soft in her arms.
The attic friends all looked up at once.
Leo paused beside a stack of books.
Valentina stopped mid-twirl.
Even Déogee tilted his little puppy head curiously.
Nana smiled gently.
“Well now,” she whispered, “I think someone new has come to stay awhile.”
Carefully, she placed a soft cream-colored bunny beside an old Easter basket tucked into the corner of the attic.
One floppy ear rested gently against his shoulder.
For a moment, the bunny didn’t move at all.
Then—
Sniff sniff.
His tiny nose twitched carefully.
The attic smelled like cedar wood, warm blankets, old storybooks, and sunshine.
A few strands of soft green Easter grass still poked out from the old basket nearby.
Chew chew.
The little bunny quietly nibbled one thoughtful bite.
“Well, hello there!” Déogee barked happily as he scampered over. “What’s your name?”
The bunny blinked slowly.
“Hopper,” he said softly.
Hopper Couldn’t Seem to Hurry
“Come meet everyone!” Leo said with a grin.
But before Hopper could take more than a few tiny hops…
He paused.
Sniff sniff.
His ears lifted carefully.
“What is it?” Violet asked.
Hopper looked around the attic quietly.
“I’m listening,” he whispered.
The others exchanged curious looks.
“There’s nothing to hear,” Leo said kindly.
But Hopper wasn’t so sure.
Creeeeak.
One of the old attic floorboards groaned softly nearby.
Hopper looked down immediately.
Meanwhile, the others hurried ahead.
“Come on, Hopper!” Déogee called. “We’re cleaning the reading corner!”
Hopper carefully followed behind them.
But every few steps…
He stopped.
Sniff sniff.
Chew chew.
He noticed dust floating through warm sunbeams near the attic window.
He noticed ribbons rustling softly inside an old sewing basket.
He noticed the gentle tapping of tree branches outside the roof.
And every time Hopper paused…
The others moved farther ahead.
Soon, Hopper found himself standing quietly beside the old rocking chair.
The attic suddenly felt very busy.
Very fast.
Very loud.
His floppy ear drooped a little.
“Everything moves so quickly here,” Hopper whispered.
Some Things Take Time to Notice
Just then, Coral gently peeked out from a nearby basket.
“Well,” she said softly, “sometimes noticing things takes a little more time.”
Hopper looked down at his paws.
“I try to keep up,” he admitted.
Coral smiled kindly.
“But if you were always rushing,” she said,
“You might miss the little things everyone else needs.”
Hopper thought quietly about that.
Maybe moving slower wasn’t always a bad thing.
Maybe some hearts were simply meant to notice more.

Coral and Hopper are talking.
Hopper Notices Something New
Then—
SNIFF SNIFF.
Hopper’s nose twitched again.
This time, the smell was stronger.
Fresh air.
Lavender.
Sunshine.
And something unfamiliar.
Hopper slowly lifted his head.
The attic had grown quiet.
Even Leo stopped stacking books.
Déogee tilted his head.
“What is it?” Violet whispered.
Hopper’s nose twitched once more.
Sniff sniff.
Then—
THUMP.
A sound echoed from downstairs.
The attic friends froze.
THUMP.
THUMP.
Slow footsteps climbed the attic stairs.
Warm golden light spilled beneath the attic door.
The old doorknob gently turned.
Hopper’s floppy ear lifted.
And very softly, he whispered,
“I think someone new is coming.”
